Nie Ou

Introduction

Nie Ou was born in Shenyang, Liaoning in 1948, and is noted for her idyllic paintings of villages in a naïve style. After the Cultural Revolution (1966-76), she studied Chinese ink painting under Li Keran (1907-1989, renowned contemporary Chinese painter) at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1978. She has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in mainland China, Hong Kong and overseas including in the United States, Switzerland, Taiwan, and Indonesia. Her works have been collected by National Art Museum of China, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, and other institutions and private collectors.

1948    Born in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China
1953    Moved to Beijing with family, learned to paint at the CHoldren’s Palace after school
1954    Received her first art lessons at Beijing Municipal Youth Palace, China
1969    Was sent to Yanbei, Shanxi Province during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976)
1978    Studied Chinese Painting at the Central Painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China, under Li Keran (1907-1989, renowned contemporary Chinese painter)
1981    Graduated from a postgraduate course at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China
Became a professional artist
Awarded second prize of Beijing Fine Art Competition, China
1982    Awarded Prize for outstanding work of Exhibition of Ink Painting in China & Japan
1989    Catalogue Modern Chinese Paintings, A Selection from Beijing, Hangzhou & Sichuan, published by Alisan Fine Arts, Hong Kong
