Cheuk Ka-wai, Cherie

1989, Hong Kong

Introduction

Cherie Cheuk Ka-wai , born in 1989 in Hong Kong, obtained a BA in Fine Arts with first-class honours at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2012. She finished her MA in Fine Arts in CUHK in 2017, specializing in Chinese Gongbi painting. Her compositions are often filled with symbols and memories, as well as subjects inspired by her personal experiences and emotions. Her practice also probes the development of Gongbi after it reached its peak in Northern Song Dynasty, attempting to rejuvenate this traditional Chinese art form in the contemporary world.

Cheuk has participated in different exhibitions and exchange programmes in Beijing, Hangzhou, and Korea, and received several awards, including the Prof. Johnson Chow Su Sing Chinese Painting & Calligraphy Award, Hong Kong Chinese Meticulous Painting Association Creative Award, Madam Jan Yun-bor Memorial Awards for Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, and Liu Kuo-Sung Ink Art Award. Alisan Fine Arts began exhibiting her works in 2015 and has included them in Chinese Surrealism (2021); Uniquely Hong Kong (2020); 1st Taipei Dangdai Contemporary Art Fair; Women Ink | China Hong Kong (2019); HOPE (2018); Desiring: Post 97 Hong Kong Ink Art; Emerging Ink Artists (2017); Being and Inking: Documenting Contemporary Ink Art, Redtory Museum of Contemporary Art, Guangzhou (2016) and A Legacy of Ink:Lui Shou-Kwan 40 Years On, Hong Kong Arts Centre (2015).

Cheuk has had three solo exhibitions since 2015, the most recent one was in Taipei in 2020. She has been also featured in several major group exhibitions in recent years, including City Rhymes: The Melodious Notes of Calligraphy, Hong Kong Museum of Art (2022-2023); Ink Global (2017), New Ink: An Exhibition of Ink Art by Post 1970 Artists from the Yiqingzhai Collection at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery (2013), and Ink Asia (2016,17).
