Ha Bik-chuen

1925-2009, Hong Kong

Introduction

Born in Xinhui, Guangdong in 1925, Ha Bik-cheun was a renowned self-taught sculptor, painter, photographer and assemblage artist, noted for his wide-ranging oeuvre. He moved to Hong Kong in 1957, and early on in his career he specialised in woodblock printing, paper relief and sculpture. By the 1960s he began using tree roots as a major element in his sculptures. In 1962, he joined the Chinese Contemporary Artists' Guild, before becoming a member of the Hong Kong Visual Arts Society and the Hong Kong Sculptors Association. During his artistic career he received numerous awards including the Award for Arts Achievement in 2003, the first Visual Arts Fellowship from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 1997, Printmaker of the Year award from the Hong Kong Artists Guild in 1991 and the Fine Art Award in Sculpture and Printmaking from the Hong Kong Urban Council in 1975. In 1982, he began documenting and photographing Hong Kong’s visual art scene, which upon his passing in 2009 was generously donated to the Asia Art Archive for future research.
