In 2014, Alisan Fine Arts presented Beyond the Jade Terrace, showcasing four standout female artists, including Chu Chu, from China whose ink paintings offer a refreshingly new aesthetic sensibility. Images of Objects – Photographic Calligraphy by Chu Chu marks our first solo exhibition for Chu Chu and her first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. The dozen or so photographic and calligraphic works on display represent four different series of her oeuvre and are created specifically for this exhibition. They include: Gardenia, Fruits, Whispers of Trees, and her new series Recalling Jiangnan. As an accomplished ink painter, calligrapher and photographer, Chu Chu’s artworks blend together elements from these three different disciplines. The series Whispers of Trees perhaps best encapsulates her cross-disciplinary approach to artistic creation. First conceived during early Spring of 2010, she took inspiration from branches she found during visits to the botanical garden near her home. After bringing them back to her studio she photographed them over a period of years. Upon printing the images, she paintstakingly applied calligraphy directly onto each photograph making each one of them unique.

About the Artist
She graduated from the Department of oil painting, at the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou in 2000, where she also received her MFA in new media in 2007, and in 2015 attained her PhD in calligraphy under the tutelage of Wang Dongling. Since then, the artist has devoted herself to ink painting, and seeks to incorporate this art form with photography and calligraphy. Upon graduation in 2015, her works were included in the important modern calligraphy exhibition Writing Non-writing at the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou. That same year the gallery brought Chu Chu’s series of traditional mountain landscapes rendered in colourful compositions and calligraphic text to the inaugural edition of Ink Asia, as part of the group exhibition Tracing the Brush: Transformed Text. Last year, her series Dream of the West Lake was sold out in our booth at Art Basel Hong Kong where some new works from the same series will be showcased once again this year. Chu Chu has been widely exhibited - including in France, Germany, England, the United States, Japan, Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong - and has drawn considerable attention from collectors and institutions alike.
