Zhang Ying received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou. Though she specialised in ink and figure painting, she is drawn to the spiritual qualities of the Chinese landscape painting tradition and has focused the last decade of her practice on landscape, rock, and tree paintings. Chinese painters of the past portrayed landscapes to reflect the vastness of the universe. Similarly, a single tree and a single rock capture the entire universe of nature to which artists throughout history turned for inspiration and meditation. Zhang draws from these legacies and transforms them into her personal visual language. According to the artist, she endeavors to create a space for reflection between the present and the spiritual. Indeed, there is a meditative quality in each of her paintings—along with their poetic titles—that invites our contemplation.
In 2017, Zhang Ying held a solo exhibition Folded Scenery and participated in the group exhibition Self-Selected Compilation, both in Beijing. Recently, she also exhibited in the Contemporary Craft-Art-Design Exhibition in Hangzhou in 2023.
In 2021, POP ROCK marked Alisan Fine Arts' first collaboration with the artist and the debut exhibition of her works in Hong Kong. Following this event, her artworks were showcased in the gallery's group exhibitions around the world, namely Beyond Tradition: The Metamorphosis of Chinese Art in London in 2023; Themes and Variations in New York in 2024; Tradition Transformed in Hong Kong in 2025; and Revisiting the Jade Terrace, Alisan Atelier, Hong Kong, 2026, as part of gallery's 45th anniversary programme "Then and Now". Additionally, her works were displayed at various art fairs, including Ink Asia in Hong Kong and Art021 in Shanghai.
Her works are in the collections of China Academy of Art, Hangzhou, China; Morgan Stanley Bank Asia, Hong Kong.
