Peng Wei is internationally recognized for her contemporary exploration of literati painting traditions. She earned a BA in Chinese Painting and Oriental Cultural Art from Nankai University in 1997 and an MA in Philosophy from the same institution in 2000. She currently lives and works in Beijing, where she serves as a senior member of the Beijing Fine Art Academy and as a member of the China Artists Association. Growing up in an artistic environment as the daughter of renowned ink painter Peng Xiancheng—whom Alisan Fine Arts has represented since the 1980s—greatly influenced her work.
Through meticulous brushwork on various media, including flax paper, cotton paper, and silk, Peng creates a dialogue between centuries-old traditions and contemporary interpretations. Her unique feminine perspective critically examines and reframes traditional literati imagery, transforming historical narratives of women from male-centric representations into new contexts that reveal complex female identities and experiences.
Her recent solo exhibitions include Seven Days at Changsha Art Museum, 2024-2025. She participated in significant group exhibitions including Venice Biennale, 2017, and Utopias/Heterotopia: Wuzhen International Contemporary Art Exhibition, 2016. Currently exhibiting Walking Their Own Paths: Women Calligraphers in Contemporary Taiwan at Hengshan Calligraphy Art Centre, Taoyuan City in Taiwan, and collaborates with the mainland aromatherapy brand To Summer to create the public art installation Hidden Room on display at West Bund Gate M, Shanghai.
Her works are housed in prestigious public collections including Cleveland Museum of Art, USA; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Asian Art Museum, San Francisco; Brooklyn Museum, New York; National Art Museum of China, Beijing; Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou; He Xiangning Art Museum, Shenzhen; Hong Kong Museum of Art; M+, Hong Kong; and DSL Collection.
