Wang Jie is a distinguished artist whose work explores themes of alienation and human existence. He received a Master of Fine Arts from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) and co-founded the renowned youth art collective N12 in 2003, which includes prominent artists such as Wang Guangle and Qiu Xiaofei, organising several exhibitions in Beijing and Taipei. While maintaining his art practice, Wang is an associate professor at School of Creativity and Art at Shanghai Tech University.
Wang’s artistic journey began with his 2002 series Teen Spirit, blending childhood memories with feelings of alienation in a fantasy-like style. By 2007, he began employing a unique symbolic language to challenge traditional visual narratives, creating imagery that transcends conventional notions of time and space. In his recent works, images of desert poplar and rock in expansive environment verging on abstraction invite contemplation on humanity’s relationship with nature and time.
Wang Jie’s art has garnered international acclaim, with selected exhibitions including The Absence of The Presence at Today Art Museum in Beijing and Generation Suss-sauer-Chinas neue Kunstle at Mannheim Art Museum in Berlin. He received the Gold for the “Eland” Art Prize at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2009 and was named Artist of the Year by Art and Wealth magazine in 2012.
