Zhang Yirong is known for her quietly sophisticated butterfly and flower paintings. Born in 1979 in Shaanxi, China, Zhang first received her training in classical Chinese ink painting at a young age from her father, Zhang Xiubiao. In 2001 she obtained her BA from the Communication University of China, Beijing and earned an MA from Peking University in 2008. Upon graduation, she practiced ink painting and has since created meticulous works that display her ability to capture painted subjects in exquisite and analytical details.
Her art, which often features a feminine sensitivity and natural style, draws from a wide range of classical influences and inspirations from the Song and Yuan Dynasties, particularly the Song Dynasty artistic tradition of direct observation. Zhang’s elegantly wrought compositions avoid hackneyed themes and instead focus on an organic source of perfected beauty.
In recent years, Zhang has held solo exhibitions in Moscow and Suzhou. Additionally, she has participated in group exhibitions hosted by prestigious museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, New York Historical Society, Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida, and the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Zhang's exceptional artworks have been acquired by renowned institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum in New York, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Harn Museum of Art.
Alisan Fine Arts has showcased Zhang's paintings in numerous group exhibitions and art fairs for more than a decade. These include Beyond the Jade Terrace in 2014, which showcased four young Chinese women artists; a joint exhibition with Tai Xiangzhou in 2017; Contemporary Chinese Art in Cromwell Place, London in 2022; Ink Alchemy in 2023, and Themes and Variations at our New York Gallery in 2024. We have also featured her works at prominent art events such as Art Basel Hong Kong, Art Taipei, and Ink Asia.
