Cheuk Ka-wai, Cherie

1989
Hong Kong
Cherie Cheuk Ka-wai , born in 1989 in Hong Kong, obtained a BA in Fine Arts with first-class honours at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2012. She finished her MA in Fine Arts at CUHK in 2017, specialising in Chinese Gongbi painting. Her compositions are often filled with symbols and memories, as well as subjects inspired by her personal experiences and emotions. Her practice also probes the development of Gongbi after it reached its peak in the Northern Song Dynasty, attempting to rejuvenate this traditional Chinese art form in the contemporary world. Art historian Doris Sung comments on Cheuk in her book Women of Chinese Modern Art, "her work is a quiet inspection about the relationship between human and nature, and subtly commenting on the issues of our contemporary Anthropocene world."

Over the years, Cheuk received over ten awards, including the recent Liu Kuo-Sung Ink Art Award in 2022. In particular, she was commissioned twice by the Hong Kong Museum of Art. The first commission was to design the wallpaper for A Chinese Scholar’s Studio Tour as part of the Jockey Club Education Programmes for museum exhibition Honouring Tradition and Heritage: Min Chiu Society at Sixty in 2021. The second commission was to create a monumental scroll painting installation titled Gathering of Ten Fragrances, exhibited at Fragrance of Time: In Search of Chinese Art of Scent in 2024.

Cheuk has held four solo exhibitions since 2015, including her first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, Cheuk Ka-wai Cherie: A Wrinkle in Time, presented by Alisan Fine Arts. Major group exhibitions include City Rhymes: The Melodious Notes of Calligraphy, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 2022-2023; Chinese Surrealism, French May Arts Festival Associated Project, 2021; Uniquely Hong Kong, 2020; 1st Taipei Dangdai Contemporary Art Fair; Women Ink | China Hong Kong, both 2019; HOPE, 2018; Desiring: Post 97 Hong Kong Ink Art; Ink Global, both 2017; Being and Inking: Documenting Contemporary Ink Art, Redtory Museum of Contemporary Art, Guangzhou, 2016; A Legacy of Ink: Lui Shou-Kwan 40 Years On, Hong Kong Arts Centre, 2015; New Ink: An Exhibition of Ink Art by Post 1970 Artists from the Yiqingzhai Collection, Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 2013.

Her works can be found in Hong Kong Museum of Art, China CITIC Bank-Art in CNCBI, Hong Kong, and many important private collections including Living Collection and Yiqingzhai Collection, Hong Kong.
